Stay Safe this Winter: Tips to Avoid Injuries in the Snow

With winter right around the corner comes a host of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. Follow some simple tips to keep these activities safe and fun!

Weather. Check the weather before heading outside. Exposure to higher winds or active snow may change how you dress or the number of layers needed. Applying sunscreen is important as well as snow reflects sunlight and increases exposure.

Wardrobe. Wear moisture wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer. Make sure to protect fingers and toes with the proper gloves, socks/boots and a hat or helmet liner.

Watch for the right equipment. Be in tune to the sports specific equipment that you need. For example, bindings for skis need to be fitted appropriately to minimize injury and wrist guards are a great tool for snowboarding to prevent upper extremity fractures.

Wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet for winter outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding, or ice skating is crucial for protection against heading injuries. Choose the right type of helmet for your activity and ensure it fits correctly.

Watch your environment. Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the terrain according to the activity. Also, be aware of the people around you in sports such as skiing or snowboarding to avoid collisions.

Make sure your kids stay safe and are supervised during these winter activities and enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer!
