Ask an Expert: Where Should I Take My Child for Medical Care?

When your child is sick or injured, knowing where to go can make all the difference. At HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, we offer expert pediatric care across a full network of primary care providers, urgent care clinics, and emergency rooms—so your family is supported every step of the way.

Primary Care

Your child’s Primary Care Provider (PCP) is your first stop for everyday health needs, including:

  • Well-child visits and annual checkups

  • Immunizations and developmental screenings

  • Managing chronic conditions like asthma or allergies

  • Non-urgent concerns such as mild rashes or behavioral questions

Establishing care with a pediatrician ensures your child’s health is monitored consistently and proactively.

Urgent Care

Urgent care clinics are ideal for non-life-threatening issues that need prompt attention, such as:

  • Fevers (in older children)

  • Earaches or ear infections

  • Sore throats or strep

  • Minor cuts, sprains, or burns

  • Pink eye, rashes, or bug bites

  • Cold and flu symptoms

Urgent care is a great option when your pediatrician’s office is closed or unavailable, and your child needs care that can’t wait.

Emergency Room (ER)

Visit the Emergency Room for serious or potentially life-threatening symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty breathing or severe asthma attacks

  • High fever in infants under 3 months

  • Seizures

  • Severe allergic reactions

  • Broken bones or head injuries

  • Persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration

  • Sudden changes in behavior or consciousness

At HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, our dedicated pediatric emergency room is open 24/7 and staffed by board-certified emergency medicine specialists trained to care for children—so you can feel confident in your decision.
